Anisha Abraham and Dinesh Verma.
Anisha will be away on maternity
leave starting next week and
will not be available for a few
months. We wish her and husband,
Hannfried, the best during their
journey to parenthood!
Anisha and Dinesh discuss the
recent vote of confidence passed
by India’s Parliament for Prime
Minister Singh’s government.
This vote, as we all know,
clears the way for the civil
nuclear energy deal between
India and the US. BusinessWeek
reports that while US companies
have been patiently waiting for
approval of Indian Parliament,
France and Russia have leaped to
the front of the queue to take
advantage of the situation by
helping India build a nuclear
reactor in Kudankulam, in
southern India.
Other stories discussed this
week include:
- A recent report by the Justice
Department on Department’s
internal hirings where Civil
Service laws were by broken by
using politics to guide the
hiring decisions. The report
also found that some officials
from the White House were
actively involved in many hiring
decisions.
- Washington Post report on busy
teens whose health is taking a
toll because of their
pressure-filled lives. Anisha
Abraham (Chief of Adolescent
Medicine in Georgetown Hospital)
who was interviewed by the Post
for this article, advises
parents to evaluate their teens
to see if there is a burnout
from their over-programmed
lives. If so, parents should
intervene and re-prioritize
activities for their children.
- Outsourced Parental Care:
Little India story about a North
Carolina man who took his
parents to India for its
inexpensive medical and nursing
care.
- An oilman from Texas, T. Boone
Pickens, has created a blueprint
to reduce foreign oil dependence
by America by building new wind
generation facilities and better
utilizing natural gas resources.
- Hindustan Times report on two
Indian teenagers who won an
India-wide pitching contest and
have been selected by US-based
promoters to become professional
baseball players!
- Two school districts in
Houston, Texas think Hindi is an
important language and should be
taught in schools. They are
introducing the first Hindi text
book for High School students in
the US.
- Indian actor, Akshay Kumar, is
doing his new venture based on
American TV show, “Fear Factor”.
It is called, “Khatron Ke
Khiladi”. He is also recording a
duet with American rapper, Snoop
Dogg. The duet will be featured
in Hindi film, “Singh is Kinng”.
- Indian actress, Shilpa Shetty,
will be part of India’s take on
the reality TV Show, “Celebrity
Big Brother”.

Host Ramesh Butani speaks to
attorney, Mark Riedy, who has
done extensive work in South
Asia, especially in India. Mark
tells viewers about the immense
number of business opportunities
that exist in India and its
neighboring countries (like
Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri
Lanka). He also talks about how
the US and other multinational
companies can start businesses
in India, negotiate deals on
energy/infrastructure, develop
properties, (hotels/condos) and
